Founded in 1989, the Hereford Photography Festival has presented a broad range of international photography for sixteen consecutive years. The UKís only annual photography festival, it has never lacked ambition or serious intent and its mission is to promote Hereford as a centre of excellence in photography through an annual festival, supported by a year round programme of events, that engages and inspires local and national audiences and promotes photography as a critical cultural practice.
The festival takes place in venues and galleries in and around the city of Hereford for the month of October. In recent years, the festival has attracted many more visitors and much media attention, particularly on some of the more Ďcontroversialí works that have been exhibited.
During the month-long festival, there are a number of seminars, one-to-one portfolio reviews, appreciation days, community participatory projects and series of lectures on photography which the public can become involved with. There is also an on-line photography auction. Each exhibitor donates a print, as do some Friends of the Festivalí, all of which are auctioned at the end of the festival to the highest bidder.
